SALEM – A woman armed with a stun gun chased after a man in Salem after he exposed himself to her Thursday night.
Lisa Haecherl had just finished a long day of work at the Salem Center and was headed to her car around 8 p.m. She had an uneasy feeling she was being followed, and once she got into her car, a man walked up to her and exposed himself.
Then he started to walk away.
That's when Haecherl turned the tables and chased after the man.
"I flung open my door, and I asked him to come back, and he started to come back, and I told him I was going to tase him, and I let my Taser off for about 20 seconds and he started running," she said.
Haecherl wasn't able to get him with the stun gun so she jumped into her car and chased after him, cornering him between her car and a fence.
"He only had one option and it was to jump the fence, and he jumped it. He did not jump it gracefully," she said.
Officers and a K-9 unit swarmed the area but couldn’t locate the suspect. Police are hoping to track down the suspect before he strikes again.
Thursday’s incident was in the same area where several people were recently groped.

STUN GUNS: WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO THEY WORK:
Evolving from the old cattle prod, stun guns are electronic shocking devices designed to incapacitate a person by disrupting the brains communication to the body's muscles. Stun guns are battery powered. The power is sent through multiple transformers that boost voltage and reduce amperage, which builds up a charge in the capacitor and then releases the charge through the electrodes. There is also an oscillator, which produces a specific pulse pattern that is made to mimic the body's won electric signals. Once that energy from the stun gun is dumped into the attacker's muscles, it causes them to do a great deal of work rapidly by interrupting the tiny neurological impulses that control and direct voluntary muscle movement. You can touch any part of assailant's body, but the large muscle areas and the upper torso is your primary target. A second touch will startle and repel assailants, giving some pain and muscle contractions. A moderate length touch of 2 to 4 seconds can cause an attacker to fall to the ground and result in some mental confusion. A touch of 5 or more seconds can cause loss of balance and muscle control, mental confusion and disorientation. No sound will be heard when touching an attacker with a stun gun. Under no conditions you can suffer a charge back to your own body, even if assailant is holding you.

Is Damsel in Defense Anti-Gun??

Damsel In Defense is neither Pro- or Anti-Gun! Its about being prepared for a number of circumstances at home and one the go.

I have been told by some when they see me at a vendor show I just carry a gun. That is your right and I myself own a gun, however, sometimes a gun is not the answer to every situation. I do indeed tell them that.

I will give you an example:  I'm home alone with my girls fast asleep and I hear an intruder my children wake up and there is a stranger in the house. I think my girls would be effected by this situation alone NOW add the gun factor, if my two girls saw mommy shoot someone in our house I think that is traumatizing. But to stun them with my stun gun and have my gun pointed at the stranger now laying on my floor from 7.5 mil volt shock and I'm on the phone with 911. THAT is less traumatic than seeing mommy shooting someone.

It's not about being pro or anti-gun. To me its PRO-Multiple Choices. Really, it's not even about the products we offer. Yes, we offer non-lethal products for women who are not comfortable with guns. Damsel has products that some are not as comfortable with as others also.

It's about confidence. It's about knowing how to defend yourself. It's about awareness. It's about knowing your how to prevent a crime from being committed against you. Being Prepared. It's about education and knowing how to use any tool you have on hand to save yourself. It doesn't matter what that tool is, as long as you have the know how and the confidence to follow through to protect yourself in a time of danger. Showing you what we have to offer and letting each individual choose what is best for them. Lets get educated with tips and tricks of safety and it doesn't stop there. We WANT women to KNOW how to use these products. We recommend that any purchase be backed up by some sort of self defense training. The goal is to get out of a bad situation before the need arises for using such tools, but also having those tools on hand in case the need for them actually arises. It's better to have something, ANYTHING, on hand and never need it, than need something and not have it in a bad situation when it's needed. It doesn't matter what that something is, if you have it, USE it. Confidently.

It's about being EDUCATED. It's about being EQUIPPED. It's about being EMPOWERED. It's about PREVENTION. And it's about changing the future. For the better. One woman at a time, because every woman deserves defending. That's why I am a Damsel.
